Types of Adoptions

Adoption.

The word itself conjures up a myriad of emotions for those who have experienced it, whether you’ve adopted a child, given up a child, or you’ve helped others in the process. Adoption is a noble pursuit taken on by families who want to give children a loving home and a noble sacrifice for birth parents who care enough for their children to give them a better home. However, there are different types of adoptions that you should be aware of if you are considering becoming adoptive parents.

AIM Adoptions in Houston is an adoption agency who helps both birth mothers and adoptive families give a baby the best home possible. For over 30 years, we’ve placed hundreds of children with loving homes. Below, we’ll go over the types of adoptions that are available for adoptive families. Contact us today to get started!

TYPES OF ADOPTIONS

Domestic Infant Adoption

Domestic infant adoption is where you will adopt an infant from a family in the United States. Depending on the adoption agency you are working with, this can be a baby in your community, or it can be a baby in a different state. Usually, the birth mom will choose the adoptive parents, and you can both choose to have an open adoption or not. However, most adoptions today have at least some form of openness, meaning that as part of the agreement to place their baby for adoption, the birth mother wants to be able to have some form of contact with her baby. While closed adoptions were the norm decades ago, with more and more children wanting to know their parents, open adoptions are more often favored. There are usually many other parts related to the adoption process, which is known as post-placement contract agreements.

International Adoption

International adoptions are where you will adopt a baby from another country. Every country has different rules for adoption, and usually adoption agencies specialize in either domestic or international adoption. It’s best to find an adoption agency that works with the country you are interested in. Do note that international adoptions are the most complicated of adoptions because not only do you have to meet the requirements of your state, but you also have to meet adoptive requirements of the foreign country as well. Know that international adoption agencies must be certified by the State Department, and adoptive parents are also subject to the State Department’s requirements as well.

Foster Adoption

Foster adoption is where you adopt a child from the foster care system. These are usually older children who have been taken away from their parents for some reason. These can also be children with special needs. Sometimes it’s unclear how the child becomes eligible for adoption, and it is usually the foster parents who end up adopting the child.

Independent Adoptions

Independent adoptions are adoptions where an agency is not used, and adoptions take place when a birth mother finds an adoptive family. This is allowed in most states and most often takes place when the birth mother has a relationship with the adoptive family. In these cases, it’s best to obtain the services of an adoption lawyer in order to make sure all legal requirements are met and that the baby is legally adopted.
